The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management (SLITHM) has officially unveiled the Sri Lanka National Tourist Interpreter Training Program (SLNTIT), a globally benchmarked initiative set to modernize the nation’s tourism landscape.

Moving beyond traditional tour guiding, this pioneering program aims to cultivate a new generation of professionals capable of “interpreting” the island’s soul—integrating deep-time heritage, biodiversity, and cultural nuances with world-class communication skills.

Speaking at the launch, Mr. Dheera Hettiarachchi, Chairman of SLITHM, underscored the urgency of the initiative. He noted that as global travel trends shift toward immersive and educational experiences, Sri Lanka must adapt to stay competitive. “Sri Lanka urgently requires highly skilled tourist interpreters to meet the evolving expectations of global travelers,” Mr. Hettiarachchi stated. “This program is not just about education; it is about generating economic value, strengthening our industry’s backbone, and creating rewarding, high-level career paths for our youth.”

The program distinguishes itself through its rigorous academic framework. Senior Professor Raj Somadeva, a key architect of the curriculum, emphasized that the SLNTIT bridges the gap between scientific research and field practice. “We are elevating tourism interpretation into a recognized, knowledge-based discipline,” Professor Somadeva remarked. “By grounding our interpreters in heritage studies and scientific accuracy, we ensure that the stories told to the world are authentic, deep, and indisputable.”

As the national apex body for tourism training, SLITHM will serve as the primary custodian of the program. The institute has committed to a three-pillar execution strategy such as, Curriculum Design, Quality Control and Workforce Development.

For decades, Sri Lanka has been celebrated for its beaches and hospitality. However, the SLNTIT marks a strategic pivot toward intellectual tourism. By professionalizing the “Interpreter” role, Sri Lanka aims to join the ranks of top-tier global destinations that offer more than just a visit—they offer a profound understanding of a nation’s place in history.

Applications and further details regarding the program’s first intake are expected to be announced via the official SLITHM portal shortly.
