Speaking at the annual Iftar celebration organized by the Sam Sam Foundation yesterday (03) at the Marine Grand Banquet Hall in Wellawatte, the Chairman made these remarks. This year’s celebration, held under the theme ‘Light and Brotherhood,’ was attended by the Mayor of Colombo, Mrs. Vraie Cally Balthazaar, alongside Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne and several multi-religious clergy members.” Explaining the purpose of the event, the Chairman of the Zam Zam Foundation, Mufti Yoosuff Haniffa, pointed out that a better society can be created if we always respect each other as fellow citizens belonging to different ethnicities. He stated that Islam is built on three main pillars and emphasized that compelling anyone to follow religious content is not part of the faith. He further noted that everyone should have the space to respect and follow their own religious beliefs and added that Islam strictly prohibits the disparagement of any religion. Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar echoed her sentiments, connecting social peace to national prosperity. She noted that religious harmony is not just a social ideal but also a vital necessity for Sri Lanka’s economic development and long-term stability. The Zam Zam Foundation is a leading NGO engaged in multi-religious and community development activities across Sri Lanka. For years, the foundation has been conducting social welfare programs to promote social cohesion, education, and women’s leadership. To dispel misconceptions regarding Islam within society, the foundation also conducts a free basic Islamic studies course open to individuals of any religion or ethnicity, with the sixth batch currently in progress.
