Post Views: 520 A two-day workshop on creative news storytelling (narrative journalism) and producing features of social relevance was jointly organized by the High Commission of Canada in Sri Lanka, Newsreel Asia, and the Sri Lanka Press Institute. The program was designed to enhance the skills required for presenting feature stories in journalism, targeting professional journalists with more than three years of experience in the media field. Accordingly, 40 journalists were selected from a large number of applications received from across the island, and the workshop was successfully held on January 21 and 22 at the Amari Hotel, Colombo. Marking the opening of the first day of the training program, Her Excellency Isabelle Marie Catherine Martin, the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, highlighted the timely importance of such initiatives. She shared her views on the impact that compelling stories can have in inspiring the public to take positive action. The High Commissioner also expressed her gratitude to the Sri Lanka Press Institute for providing the opportunity to partner in facilitating the workshop. She noted that this program marked the final event in a series of workshops conducted across five South Asian countries. She further thanked Newsreel Asia for conceptualizing and implementing the program, emphasizing that in the information age, journalists have greater opportunities not only to shape public opinion but also to stand firmly for equality. Citing a study conducted by Reuters, the High Commissioner pointed out that public engagement with traditional media is declining worldwide, while the growth of social media, video platforms, and digital methods continues to rise. She concluded by extending her best wishes to all participating journalists. According to the program schedule, two sessions conducted by Indian journalist Vishal Arora introduced participants to narrative journalism and the art of creative news storytelling, successfully enhancing their knowledge. Harshita Rathore, who delivered a presentation on video storytelling, and Surabhi Singh, who conducted a session on visual grammar, provided journalists with new perspectives on their profession. The first day of the workshop concluded accordingly. Throughout the second day, participants were informed about several additional important topics. Resource persons from the Sri Lanka Press Institute also conducted a session on fact-checking and the tools used for verification. At the end of the second day, an interactive discussion was held to address questions related to the workshop content.
