Russian Geographical Society’s 180th anniversary.

In celebration of the 180th anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS), a landmark tree-planting event took place at the Colombo Public Library. A total of 180 tropical trees were planted, symbolizing strong ties of friendship and cooperation.

The event brought together key figures including Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Environment- Hon. Anton Jayakody , Mayor of Colombo- Her worship Vraie Cally Balthazaar , Russian Embassy Charge de Affairs- Mr. Alexander Dyagilev, Director of the Russian House- Madam Maria Popova, Former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia, General secretary of the Sri Lanka- Russia Friendship society and Chairman of the centre of the Russian Geographical Society in Sri Lanka- Dr. Saman Weerasinghe, Additional secretary of the Ministry of health, Former Deputy Director General of Health services at the Ministry of Health and the Director of the National Hospital in Sri Lanka, Former President of the ASLGSC and member of the centre of the Russian Geographical Society in Sri Lanka- Dr. Kumara Wickremasinghe, President of the ASLGSC AND secretary General of the centre of the Russian Geographical Society in Sri Lanka- Mr. Buddhapriya Ramanayaka, Chief Librarian of the Colombo public Library- Ms. Varuni Gangabadaarchchi, Acting Chief editor of the Sinhala Encyclopedia and member of the centre of the Russian Geographical Society in Sri Lanka- Dr. Ranjana Senasinghe, Delegation from Russia – Ms. Arti Soni and Mr.Amar Mekhdiklanov and other prominent public figures.

The initiative, warmly stated as“Green Harmony”, also marked the opening of the breathtaking RGS photo exhibition “The Most Beautiful Country”. Madam Maria Popova and Dr. Saman Weerasinghe highlighted that the RGS presence in Sri Lanka is a symbol of strengthening cultural and humanitarian ties, while also fostering cooperation in vital fields like environmental protection and sustainable ecological development.
The greening of the Library grounds stand as a lasting symbol of friendship and cooperation for generations to come.
